so what i hate about restaurant week is that it's supposed to be a cheap meal to try out a place. but in the end it's never like that, instead you hate the prix fixe menu and end up ordering something off the normal menu which is more expensive and not the cheap taste you were hoping for.
at brasserie jo, the prix fixe menu wasn't any cheaper. in fact they let you order the items a la carte... what's the point in that? the odd thing was the rest of the menu was reasonably priced. so ordering off the normal menu was a better value... definitely not my normal restaurant week experience.
the restaurant had a nice atmosphere in river north. it was a bit of a ride getting down into the city. it was pouring, and i mean really pouring. i've never driven in chicago with that much rain. we could barely see the road while driving. not to mention i didn't have an umbrella so we got wet.
my roommates C and N were joined with our good friends N and J (i know it's all cryptic, but deal with it). we ordered a bunch of appetizers and shared. we ordered different main courses, of course C got the duck. how could he resists, he's practically addicted to it. not surprisingly roomie N got the steak. and the girls got fish. my guess is they wanted something a little healthier. the funny thing was that J didn't know that she had ordered a french salad with tuna. she thought it was a normal dish.
the skatewing was great - it was sauted in butter and has the texture of a scallop and the flavor of a very mild fish. it was the second time i had skatewing in as many weeks. the first time was with SY at blackbird.
the desserts were great. the mousse came out in a big dish and was served at the table. and the floating island was sorta half marshmallow and half meringue in texture (with a little lemon zest).
