mucha, the czech illustrator
when i arrived in prague, i didn't think that i'd discover an artist i hadn't heard of at all and learn to really love his work. while i clearly remember studying art nouveau in art history in high school. i recall being more partial towards the architecture and design features of the early 20th century movement than the art. the furniture design in particular was attractive, since much of the movement was focused on nature, the detailed elements worked into furniture was beautiful. i never gave much thought to the visual arts in the style (to be fair we didn't really spend much time on art nouveau in general).
i guess the other reason is because illustration is a bit of the black sheep of visual arts, with the cloud of "comic book" art looming around it, i can understand why. but the level of detail and skill required to create these images is really astounding.
the above image is of sarah bernhardt (arguably the most famous french stage actress ever), the patron for mucha, who became famous after she asked that he create the posters for her plays.
